tools and methods of the ancient times
the process of early age tattooing was long and painful. Some of the first tools used in tattooing where made out of bone, stone and wood. There where mainly two types of tools used in the process of making most tribal tattoos : a small rake like shaped tool and another plain rod with a flat surface. the rake like shaped tool was first dipped into it's ink or dye and then punctured into the skin by being taped by the flat tool. Primitive man believed the process of tattooing released sacred life forces, also the letting of blood was associated with sacrifice to the gods. The risk of death by infection was a great concern but to shy away from tattooing was a risk of being labeled as a coward.
An amazing variety of tattooing methods developed in different cultures in North and South America. Many Indian tribes routinely tattooed the body or face by simple pricking. Many early and primitive people incorporated tattoo art into their societies. This is true of Native Americans as well as people from the Polynesian and Hawaiian islands.
